In 1975, a group of Island residents grew tired of crowds and slow play and were frustrated with difficulties in getting tee-times they wanted. In response, they decided to build a private golf club available to golfers no matter where they lived with a small enough membership to preclude the necessity of tee times. After exploring their location options, the group focused on Hilton Head Plantation, which was in its early stages of development.
The project was announced to the public in June 1978. The now internationally known golf course architect Rees Jones was selected as the architect and New Golf as the construction
contractor.
On August 1, 1980, the Club opened with a full field of golfers participating in a two day "tin whistle" tournament. Twenty-six years later, Rees Jones completed a renovation of the course, updating the design, reconstructing the course, and restoring or replacing its systems. The clubhouse was completed in 1982 and was last refurbished handsomely in
2005.
During the entire history of the club, the small size and friendly nature of the membership has been maintained. It is key to our
success.
